Works after power applied, could use some more instruction
Jarred Braun (Bloomington, IN) 9/19/2014 6:02 AM
This is my first attempt at making a battery pack. I was interested in creating a power supply that could operate a computer between 12v-19v. Soldering was super easy and the fuel gauge is a nice option. I used 3400mAh 18650's (from BatterySpace) combined with plastic battery holders and some 18awg wire. The unit didn't work until I connected it to a power source, which I've read elsewhere on the site so I was prepared for that. I used the completed pack on a PICO-UPS (similar to the 12VDC Micro UPS) as the battery input and connected the constant DC to the primary which powered the unit. Unfortunately I need to do some more testing, especially with the charging aspect of the board. Voltage outputs when read with the voltmeter registered at ~18v, so I inadvertently pre-overcharged the batteries somehow, and the UPS refuses charge the pack as is, but it will register it as active and available for power draw. I'm sure the board operates as intended, but I do have some lingering concern with wiring (feedback appreciated.) This is my first build. The instructions show 'approximately' how the cells should be connected to the board in series. Since I'm using a battery holder, I series the holders together +/- and then soldered individual leads from the +/- spots on the holder to the points on the board. If I'm reading the instructions correctly, possibly the wires should come together on the board, and not on the pack. My fear is in my configuration there is no protection and the circuit will always be complete in the event of a failure, or worse, no overcharge protection for the cells.
